| First Dance |
[May. 19th, 2008|04:22 pm] |
So a bunch of us are getting married this summer, myself included, but we have kinda got stuck over what we could use as a first dance song.... so anyone care to put forward some ideas. Although I'm hope to be inspired by some good ideas I'm also hoping for some suggestions in poor taste.
Cheers |

Been going to a special stable that teaches jousting and skill at arms a couple of times now, during the break my friend and I were wondering how to get in with a couple of the mounted re-enactment groups. Cue stranger coming up and asking me if I every attended a thing called the Gathering which was apparently a LARP event a few years ago, so after matching lists of peoples name she tells me if we every fancy doing the riding thing for re-enactment to give her group a call… KAACHING. So once again the world grows a bit smaller and more oddly shaped, it’s amazing the number of people that have “done” the Gathering, one day I’ll be having an operation and before I pass out I’ll hear a voice “ Didn’t I see you in a field in Derby… you killed my character” So the next day I go up to train with the group, lo and behold four LARPers out of the twelve or so people there. Lots of formation riding, wheeling in rows of nine and that kinda stuff. The training games for beginners were brilliant ridding at each other trying to knock of a paper cup gaffaed to you lovely authentic armour with a stick covered in pipe lagging…sound familiar? Even given the foam weapons and stuck on paper cups ridding at partially armoured figures was a special little thrill and will look forward to doing with steel and fully armoured. It’ll be like kissing the face of god.... with tongues. |

| Not the party spirit |
[Sep. 24th, 2007|02:49 pm] |
So looking at wedding venues, but thats not the point. So your hiring this place, Barn, Castle what ever, for a whole bunch of money and I keep seeing these strange boxes with a line of led's. When I ask what this is they tell it's a noise meter and when you go over the limit it cuts the power to the band/room.... I mean ... I mean thats just not rock and roll.
The only thing they could possible add to a party is if people formed a line and took turns screamimng into the bloody things to see who can plunge the room in to darkness the fastest. |

| Bank Holiday |
[May. 10th, 2007|01:53 pm] |
Inspired to write something by the White Spider… Did our first few paid fighting demos at Eastnor castle, basically eight plate mail clad chaps, running through drills and long sword training, all free fighting cos we are too stooopid to learn to choreograph or organise but in the style of the beloved Vipers it all worked out rather well.. As the other fights were excellent but choreographed so ours have a nice brutal and real feel to it, particularly when a war hammer spike went through a shield and the combatants weren’t able to separate. I’m the media whore so I got to do the narration, which was a great load of fun, apparently the trick is to focus on violence and children’s fond attachment to it…oooo as I was going out to do a show the organiser Rodger Stirling Brown (a royal armourer…though I haven’t seen her in full plate yet) throws me some mail to put on it’s only pucker 15th Centaury riveted mail from the castle collection. (someone always has way cooler toys than you)
Anyway lovely weather, met a load of fantastic very kind people, fired a brown bess, bunches of flint locks and a cannon, we christened our new portable forge and got some “cannot be beat” tutorials on armouring from the gods of the subject.
Am just getting me hearing back..
but a very fine time indeed….. |

| Quite a good week |
[Nov. 13th, 2006|02:28 pm] |
So passed Driving test first time....hoooraa.
Med total War 2 came out and it's pretty.
Borrat film I didn't really want to whatch had me in pain with so much laughing so thumbs up on that one.
The Sunday re-enactment training sessions are getting pretty interesting, with a lot of different long sword technics etc.
Survived first Horse riding lesson and loving it, booked a bunch more of the expensive sessions but it's one step closer to the mounted skill at arms course I want to do and giving jousting a try.
So all in all good I guess |

| 1066 ..Yea baby |
[Oct. 18th, 2006|01:01 pm] |
On Sunday turned up to see the Battle of Hasting re-enactment, and it look brilliant. Spectators by the ten's of thousands on a beautifull day. The site of 3 thousand re-enactors from all over England and europe walking on to the field was truly, truly amazing, felt a bit of envy and wished I had managed to sort myself out with more kit to take part..but then again to whatch it was pretty excellent too. The Norman archers loosed about 3-4 thousand arrows in a few minets in to the Saxson center block you could hear the thud in to the upraised shields like rain, the fighting was amazing aswell it was to be said. The only thing was from a spectator's POV is that the seven pushes up hill by the Normans became a little boring after a while. But the thing that made me "squeeel like a pig" was whatching therepeated 80+ strong cavalry charges up and in to the shield wall ...totally made my mind up about trying that sorta thang. So booking lessons to get some basic riding skills and just around the corner is an eshablish riding school that specialize in medieval mounted combat skills ...it's a sign I tell you!
Very nice touch after the battle was the spot where Harrold fell, was covered in Commemorative wreaths "To the last English King", from all over England, America, Russa, France and Germany |

| Sad, sad things that make me happy. |
[Sep. 14th, 2006|09:37 am] |
So in preparation for the weekend I got down to a rather sad task that I get a strange joy out of ,namely polishing my plate mail, I mean it’s bloody cleaning really I’ve never liked cleaning. So wondered about other sad little tasks other people get up to I know a fella that enjoys re-writing their character before they table top, beat that!
…oh and if anyone is in the area we’ll be at the medieval fair at Groombridge place near Tumbridgewells, armoured hooligans hitting each other, a little bit of shopping, see where they shot Pride and Pred etc. |

[Aug. 29th, 2006|02:07 pm] |
Well bank holiday weekend and for the first time in years I’m not going to the Gathering but instead to a large re-enactment bash at Herstmonceux. Now I knew I would miss all my LARP mates and the trappings of LARP, but as the re-enactment group decided they should write themselves characters, and talked of creating a siege camp with gates and gate guards the home sickness disappeared.
The festival was soooooo great, 2 battles a day under the re-constructed castle walls, moat, moat bridge and beautiful gardens, with combatants from all over Europe.
We came in third in the living history completion not bad as it was the first year we entered, but the camp was great with blacksmith forges, armory workshop, open air kitchens, training arenas and all the amour on display.
My highlights were beging lucky enough to play a herald for the afternoon battles and delivering “Ordos stylee “ smack down speeches in front of thousands of spectators.
But the my favorite joy was of being alone on top of the long moat bridge steps with the castle as a backdrop in my new plate amour fighting off (rather painfully) a hoard of armored hooligans as the rest of our defeated army retreated in to the castle. The thousand spectators cheering and going wild as another of my group came charging back and stage dived in to them ….. the only problem with this was most of the re-enactors weren’t aware that the scripted battle had ended ten minuets ago and as the rest of the company stormed back it ended in a violent but friendly free for all. The safety officers gave us all warnings, the crowd cheered like crazy and the organizers bought us beer for the night …winna.
It is great to have something shiny and new to be interested in.
Also learnt to build a beer slide, eight 6 foot tables joined together covered in layer of beer, a loon lying face down on a tray with sadists gripping his legs and arms and throwing him down the track to get their victim as far down the length of tables as they can.
So looking forward to catching up of the crazy goings on of the LARP world. |

| The weekend |
[Aug. 7th, 2006|10:12 am] |
Friday Missed Amanda and Flexo’s wedding cos stoppid work wouldn’t give me the Friday off which was a real shame as I sure the whole thing was a blast and missed out on seeing a lot of people.
This weekend I got to see some old mates at the Sussex Medieval festival which was very unexpected and cool and very nice spending some time with them.
A re-enactment firend has made the move from the world of finance to re-creation manager at Naaarrrich castle and musiums so an extra reason to visit that part of the world....his dream job and got a pay rise!
Sunday battle was amazing fighting over a 5 foot deep ditch up to an earth works bank covered in wattle fences with arrows falling everywhere and cannon fire all in plate mail and chain, do feel a tad sore today. |

Went to Chrissie’s Sister’s Wedding last weekend… fantastic time met about 6 of her 8 uncles and 20 of her 27 cousins including the page 3 models, then made a DJ request of "Jump Jump" …yaaaaaaaay! (not really I was very well behaved) Sunday went to Portsmouth with the re-enactment group and saw the Mary Rose, Victory and Warrior ......fantastic.
Now it’s Monday and it’s all gone boring again. |

| last weekend |
[Jul. 26th, 2006|01:24 pm] |
Spent the weekend re-enacting at Agincourt … no Mr Blessed was not there, sorry. First night was electric thunder storms whilst in tenets, cool, scary, but it was ok cos we were a bit drunk.
Saturday
After the rehearsal battle, never heard of having one of them before, came running off the field with my mates as a lightning storm closed in as we sheded armour like you wouldn’t believe. Went drinking for free… I do like how the continent treats re-enactors.
Sunday Came second in a sword tournament, but beat the German No1 and last years champion so very happy with that. With much amusement and disgust heard the “script” had been changed so that the French would win the battle due to the fact that there were more of them, and they were re-enacting a battle of the 100 years war not necessarily Agincourt. All got shirty when it was asked they name a field battle they actually did win or took under %50 casualties (not including the ones they routed from)…. All got rather “historical” so we left.
Very hot for the battle, but listening to St Crispin’s day speech well delivered was great got every one in the mood, took up positions and saw we were out numbered 5 to 1, Welsh archers started singing every thing from Men of Harlech and Bread of Heaven very cool. Great fighting with lots of sportsman like French chaps but they had twigged that the English were not taking the “script” change lightly and sent an organiser to speak to us quickly. Seams they wanted their flags and banners back as they had asked for them not to be captured, the reply was we had not touched the flags but kidnapped the bearer of said item and bodily carried them off. In this re-enactment game you “die” when you receive a killing blow which depends on where you are hit, with what you are hit with and what you are wearing. The battle went on twenty minuets longer that scripted, with the French re-spawning and a few of us in a tremendous back to back stand.
Packed up on to the ferry drunk and tired, French re-enactors fantastic people, just some organisers with maybe a bit too much pride. |

No updates for a while.. or ever really.
Moved in to new house a month ago and am very happy with it, just need to sort it out a bit more and I’m there, but got a start on a yummy herb garden, if I don’t murder the poor plants first.
Loving new hobby re-enacting (wars of the roses) love the armour, the combat is such a buzz and people are great.. but have to admit I miss many aspects of LARP, but hey it’s all about trying and doing new things.
Every one seams to be having babies and getting married once again, best of luck to all of you.
Work is bloody busy.
Saw a total brilliant band called Shelmish, a German medieval folk( but more ) rock band that play large Teutonic bagpipes, and massive drums, medieval they may be but they have a solid mosh pit going on at Tewksbury. Am Fan.
Am off to Agincourt this weekend to fight the French re-enactors in a centuries old grudge match.
Vowing to update my live journal more often. |
